Coat It Before Storage: The 7-Piece Boat Kit That Ends Spring Waxing
Drag a dry palm down the hull you waxed in April. If it comes off white, the wax is gone. One coat you put on yourself is £160. A wash and wax on a 22-foot boat runs $330 to $660 a season.
Boats & Coats, 100ml: the coating bottle, and a boat on its trailer waiting for it.
You wax it every spring. By haul-out it is chalky again, and next spring you do it over. One owner on a fishing forum put a number on his full annual job, compound through wax, on a 25-foot boat: “This takes me about 40 or so hours depending on how weathered it is.” Under an oxidation-removal video another wrote, “My arms and hands hurt just watching this!”
And it is not the wax you picked. Gelcoat is porous. Wax sits on top of it, and sun and salt take wax off in weeks. A working boat detailer said it plainly on YouTube: “A spray wax and salt water will only last a few weeks if that.”
Every round of compound costs you something too. An owner under a restoration video: “each time you sand it the gel coat gets thinner and weaker.”
The other road is the marina. Detailers charge by the foot, and one owner under the oxidation-removal video wrote, “I got a quote of $700 to do this to my boat.”
If you have heard that ceramic is just marketing and nothing lasts on gelcoat, keep that suspicion. The word on the label is not what matters. What matters is whether the product bonds to the gelcoat or sits on top of it. This list starts with ours. It bonds, it is rated in years, and we will refund a bottle you have already used.
What you get is the same palm test next haul-out, on a hull that rinses clean and still has its color, and a launch weekend spent on the water. The other six picks keep that layer clean with less work than you do now.
One warning before the list. A coating protects what is there. It will not take your oxidation off. If the hull is already chalky, you buff it one more time, and then you seal it. Number 1 says how. It also says why the week before the cover goes on is the easiest week of the year to do it.
The 7 picks
1
Boats & Coats Marine Coating The one to buy
Best for: gelcoat, fiberglass and metal you are tired of waxing
One Layer That Bonds to Gelcoat, So the Wax Job Stops
You buff out the chalk, you wax it, and it comes back. One Boats & Coats owner called it “the heavy oxidation that returns in just a few months normally.”
Wax sits on top of gelcoat. Boats & Coats bonds to it. Once it cures, salt water, water spots, stains and UV land on the coating, not in the gelcoat. It is a graphene coating made with a higher share of coating solids, which is what lets it bond to porous gel coat, fiberglass and metal. Rinsing it down gets easier because the surface is non-stick.
It seals in whatever is under it. A clean, glossy hull gets coated as it is. A chalky hull has to be compounded first. Ethos does not make a marine compound, so use the one you trust. Then the Prep Kit strips the polish oils so the coating can bond: Detox prep spray, a clay bar kit and 3 edgeless towels, £16 more with the bottle.
The job is wiping, not buffing. The bottle is 100ml. You wipe it on in 3 ft by 3 ft sections, wait 1 to 3 minutes for the haze and wipe it off. Keep it off non-skid decks, and apply it between 65 and 75 degrees.
Then the boat stays dry for 48 hours. That is why you do it before storage: a boat going into storage gives it months. In April you are hunting for two dry days in a row. Ethos rates that one layer at 2+ years in marine conditions.
The owners who have reviewed Boats & Coats
“This bottle transformed a 1993 boat and brought it back to life! After the paint correction this coating gave the boat back its color and created a shine that it did not have before.”
“I buffed my 1997 Flag Blue Hull Saber 402 Sailboat, removing the heavy oxidation that returns in just a few months normally, one hull side at a time”
“This was an easy application, Boat turned out perfect.”
Best for: a boat-size wash that is safe on coatings, wax and sealants
A Gallon of Coating-Safe Soap, Sized for a Boat
Dish soap is the boat-ramp habit. It is made to strip grease off plates, not to look after a coating.
Ceramic Shampoo is made the other way: pH balanced, to clean and condition ceramic coatings, wax and sealants. It is a coating-safe shampoo, not a hull acid. Brown waterline stains need a dedicated stain remover, and Ethos does not make one.
It comes as a gallon: 128 ounces, sized for a hull. Its ceramic resins add water beading with each wash, so the hull you coated in number 1 keeps shedding water.
“I've tried a few other ceramic washes and so many others don't foam up at all. This one makes a nice foam that lasts”
Best for: drying the hull before the sun does it for you
Dry the Hull in Passes, Not Laps
A chamois is full by the time you reach the console. After that you are pushing water around while it dries into spots.
The MAX is three layers: two slick faces around an absorption core, with the edges sewn inside so nothing on the perimeter catches a fresh coating.
It is 1400 GSM and 24 by 36 inches. Ethos says it dries a sedan in two passes and a full-size truck in four or five. Two towels cover a boat: one for the hull, one for the topsides.
Start With the Coating, and Take the Prep Kit With It
Soap and a towel keep the boat clean. The coating is what ends the wax job. A coating needs 48 hours dry, and a boat in storage has months of it.
A full wash and wax runs $15 to $30 a foot. Multiply that by your own boat. On a 22-foot boat it is $330 to $660, and it is due again next season. One bottle of Boats & Coats is £160, and Ethos rates one layer at 2+ years.
Will 100ml do your boat? The product page gives no per-foot figure, so here is one owner's count. Steve G. buffed “my 1997 Flag Blue Hull Saber 402 Sailboat” and put on two coats with “about 1 & 1/2 100ml bottles.”
Take the bottle with the Prep Kit. A coating bonds to clean gelcoat and nothing else, and the kit is the last wipe-down before you coat.
30-day money-back guarantee. Use it first. If it does not perform, you get a refund.
Launch kit: the bottle with the Prep Kit, the shampoo gallon and two drying towels (numbers 1, 2 and 3). Orders over $75 ship free. Add the Launch Kit · £268
Per-foot prices: Boatzon, “Boat Detailing Cost: Real Per-Foot Prices for 2026”, October 1, 2026.
The next four are for the job itself and the season after it: the wash before the coating, the wipe-off, and the wipe-downs between trips.

Foam Cannon Pro V2
Best for: lifting scum and film before a mitt touches the gelcoat
Let the Foam Lift the Film Before You Scrub It In
Dried spray and waterline film do not rinse off. So you scrub, and the scrubbing drags grit across the hull.
The Foam Cannon Pro V2 lays down thick foam that soaks and loosens the dirt before anything touches the boat. Its air-injection design makes foam up to 50% denser than a standard cannon, so it hangs on a vertical hull side instead of sliding off.
It needs a pressure washer: 1,000 to 4,000 PSI, and electric units work from 1,300 PSI. Fill it with the shampoo in number 2.
“produces a thick, rich foam that clings to surfaces, ensuring a deep clean”
Best for: the wipe-down at the dock or on the lift
Wipe It Down at the Dock Before the Spots Dry
The boat comes out wet. The sun dries the drops on the ride home, and the spots are set before you unhitch.
DEFY is a waterless wash with ceramic resins. Spray it on, wipe it off: it lifts the light film and leaves a slick, water-beading layer behind. No hose and no bucket.
Use it on light film and fresh spots. Dried salt crust, sand and mud get rinsed off first. It is rated 4.97 from 559 reviews on its product page. If you wipe it down after every trip, this is the bottle for it.
“I just used it on my boat gettn out of the water...cleaned her up in no time !!!!”
Best for: the trailer, the tower and the metal, and a topper over the coating
Spray Protection for Everything the Coating Bottle Does Not Reach
A 100ml bottle goes on the hull. The trailer, the tower and the rails sit in the same sun and the same salt.
RESIST is a graphene and ceramic spray. Spray it, spread it, buff it. There is no cure time. It also works as a topper over a coating when the beading starts to slow down.
Its product page rates it at 12+ months of stand-alone protection per application. For the gelcoat itself, number 1 is the product Ethos makes for it, rated in years.
“Excellent shine put this on my toons for my boat. What a shine”
Owners' boats, cleaned and protected with DEFY and RESIST
“I've been using it on my boat when I get off the water in the afternoons it is so much easier to clean shine and protect all at one time”
Steven P., boat · DEFY review
“I did the Hull of The Boat a few Times. Looks great”

Microfiber Cloths, 10-Pack
Best for: wiping the coating off, then every wipe-down after
Ten Clean Towels, Because the Coating Job Eats Them
Coating residue has to come off completely before it cures. A loaded towel smears it, and a smear that cures is a dark spot.
The Boats & Coats directions call for two wipes per section: the first takes about 80% of the residue, the second takes the rest. That is a lot of clean towel on a hull.
Each cloth is 16 by 16 inches, 390 GSM and edgeless. Fold it in four and you have 8 clean sides. After the coating job they are your DEFY towels.
“they were the perfect 2 sided towel to level and remove the product”
Coat It Yourself, Pay by the Foot, or Wax It Again
Three ways to protect a hull, by what they cost, how often they come due and what they ask of you.
Coat it yourself
Pay a detailer
Wax it yourself
What it costs
£160 for the bottle, £176 with the Prep Kit
$15 to $30 a foot for a wash and wax: $330 to $660 on a 22-foot boat [1]
A tin of wax and a weekend
How often
Ethos rates one layer at 2+ years
Every time you book it
Owners say every spring, and some far more: “I wax everytime the boat comes out of the water which is usually once a week” [2]
Your time
Wiping, not buffing: 3 ft sections, 1 to 3 minutes of haze each. Then it sits dry for 48 hours, which storage gives you anyway
None
One owner: “Every year I do a complete detail of the boat which takes a lot of time.” [2]
If the gelcoat is chalky
Compound first. The coating seals what is under it
A multi-step compound job for oxidation is quoted at $45 to $75 a foot [1]. One marine detailer on YouTube, for a full detail: “I charge $45 a ft.” [2]
Compound first here too
If it does not work
30-day refund, even after you use it
Ask before you book
You are out the weekend

7 Mistakes Boat Owners Make Before Storage
None of these costs money to fix. Most of them are habits carried over from washing a car.
Leaving the hull for launch week
Everyone says it at haul-out: I will do it in the spring. In spring it is launch week, and the hull loses to the first good weekend. A coating needs 48 hours dry. A boat in storage has months of it.
Putting car wax on gelcoat
Gelcoat is porous, and wax only sits on top of it. Owners say it does not stay. One of them: “I never felt like wax did anything for gelcoat other than for a week or so.” Use a product made to bond to gel coat.
Washing with dish soap
It is made to strip grease, not to look after a coating. Use a pH balanced shampoo that is made for coatings, wax and sealants.
Storing it dirty
Scum, salt and bird droppings left under a cover get all winter to work on the gelcoat. Wash it, dry it and protect it before it gets shrink wrapped.
Skipping the waterline
The waterline is where the scum line forms and where owners see the gelcoat yellow first. Coat down to the waterline, not just the parts you see from the dock.
Letting it dry in the sun
Water left to dry is how spots set. Dry the hull with a towel that can hold all of it, or wipe it down at the dock with number 5.
Coating over chalk
A hull that looks good when wet and chalky when it dries is oxidized. A coating seals that in for years. If your palm comes off the hull white, it is not too far gone, but it has to be compounded first. Then prep it, then coat it.
Questions Boat Owners Ask Before They Coat
Is ceramic on a boat just marketing? How long does it last?
Ethos rates one layer of Boats & Coats at 2+ years in marine conditions. Roy P. coated a 1993 boat: “After the paint correction this coating gave the boat back its color and created a shine that it did not have before.”
If you are skeptical, you are in good company. Boat owners write “Time will tell how it holds up” about every product they try. So test it: the 30-day guarantee covers a bottle you have opened and used.
The product page gives no separate number for a bottom that lives in the water, so we will not give you one.
Do I have to compound it first, or can I just apply it?
If the gelcoat is glossy, wash it, prep it and coat it. If it is chalky, you have to compound it first. Put a coating over the oxidation and you seal the oxidation in. Ethos does not make a marine compound, so use the one you trust.
Steve G. did it in that order. He buffed off “the heavy oxidation that returns in just a few months normally,” then coated.
Doesn't a tin of wax do the same job?
For a few weeks, yes. If you have been waxing boats for years, you know how this goes: wax sits on top of porous gelcoat, and sun and salt take it off. That is why you wax it every spring.
A tin of wax is cheaper this year. One bottle of Boats & Coats is £160 and is rated at 2+ years per layer. What you are buying back is the weekend, twice.
I heard ceramic yellows gelcoat. Does this?
The waterline is where owners see gelcoat yellow first, because that is where the scum line sits. Boats & Coats is made to keep salt water, stains and UV on the coating, not in the gelcoat. No owner review of Boats & Coats on ethoscarcare.com reports yellowing.
How long is the job, and can my arms take it?
Coating is wiping, not buffing. You wipe it on in 3 ft sections, wait 1 to 3 minutes and wipe it off. The heavy work is the compounding, and only a chalky hull needs it.
You do not have to do it in one go. Steve G. coated his sailboat “one hull side at a time.”
How many bottles do I need?
One owner's count: Steve G. put two coats on his sailboat's hull with “about 1 & 1/2 100ml bottles.”
You apply a few drops to the applicator at a time. Coat the hull sides first, where the sun and the waterline do the damage.
Before the cover goes on
Coat It Once This Fall. Launch Clean in Spring.
You could do it in the spring. Everyone says that at haul-out, and in spring it is launch week and nobody does.
The boat is about to sit dry for months. That is the one thing a coating needs, and the one thing you never have in May. The one deadline is the weather. Ethos recommends applying it between 65 and 75 degrees. Count the weekends you have left at that temperature and order with one to spare. Miss them and it is a heated garage, or it is April again.
One bottle of Boats & Coats is £160. With the Prep Kit it is £176. A wash and wax on a 22-foot boat runs $330 to $660, and it comes due every season.
Do it now and April is simple: pull the cover, hook up the trailer, launch. And next haul-out, drag a dry palm down the hull again.
Or take the launch kit: coating with the Prep Kit, shampoo gallon and two drying towels, shipped free. Add the Launch Kit · £268
Use it first. Then decide.
Every Ethos order has a 30-day money-back guarantee, and it covers a bottle you have opened and used. Coat the hull, give it the 48 hours, then put a hose on it before the cover goes on. If water does not bead and rinse off the way we said, you get your money back. To claim it, email [email protected] within the 30 days.
P.S. The coating has to stay dry for 48 hours after you apply it. A boat going into storage gives it months. In April you are hunting for two dry days in a row.
